Our Grandchildren

January 2012

When I started this blog we had 6 grandchildren.  Today we have a total of eight.

Scott and Nicole have two born naturally and have adopted two (a brother and half-sister).  Our first grandson, Jordan was born in March 2002 and Haley, our first granddaughter was born January 2005.  Tyler was born in December 2007 and Heidi came along in July 2011.  They live in WV.

James and Tarah have four children:  Catherine - November 2006, Lydia - March 2008, Miriam - August 2009 and Silas - October 2010.  James and Tarah live about 25 miles from us in Campbell, NY.

Grandchildren are a special blessing from the Lord.  You can spoil them and then send them home!!

Intro to My Family

Let me introduce My Family:

I grew up in the country outside Painted Post, New York. I didn't live on a farm, but we did have quarter horses and at times raised a cow, pigs, chickens and rabbits. I belonged to 4-H as did all the kids in the neighborhood. Riding horses every day kept us all out of trouble and besides it was fun. Every weekend we spent competing in local horse shows and county/state fairs. It was a great life - that is until my father died of an aneurism at the age of 47. I was only 15 years old. I thought my world had collapsed, but my mother held the family together. My oldest brother had just returned from his four years in the Air Force and my other brother had just went into the Navy. My youngest sister was only 9. Shortly after my dad died, my mother had to find a job. It became my responsibility to fix dinner for my brother, sister and I. Life went on and somehow we still managed to do the horseshows on weekends - my brother would drive the truck with the horses in the back.

I started work right out of high school for Selective Service System (official name for the Draft Board). I worked there during the VietNam War and at times of protest had to be escorted into the office by FBI Agents.

Don and I met on my 18th birthday and we hit it off right away. He was just 18 too! We were married nine months later.

Don - he was raised in the big city of Elmira - right near center of town. He loved music and played the organ. He had one sister and one brother when we met. I say it that way because when we married, his mother was pregnant at our wedding. His youngest sister was born five months later.

After our wedding, we lived in Elmira Heights, but moved shortly thereafter to Elmira where we had a small apartment over our landlords. It was a great arrangement and we often had food waiting for us when we got home from work. Dot was a wonderful cook! We are still in contact with her and Marvin today - they live in S.C.

Even though I worked at the Draft Board, I couldn't keep Don from being drafted into the Army. His time had come, so he decided to enlist to get at better job. He signed up to work on computers - in an air-conditioned van. The recruiter said that it was the best job to have if you had to go to VietNam. He was glad he had made that choice when he received an assignment to go there in October of that year.

Anyway Don and I have been married over 42 years and have two sons, Scott and James, who are both married and we have 6 grandchildren - so far (keep them coming, kids). I'll write more about them later.

We have lived in New York, Virginia, Alaska, New Jersey, Arizona, Taiwan and South Korea plus Don was in VietNam for 1 year. We have loved every place we have lived in and it has helped to mold the persons we are today. I would not trade our experiences for anything. We also have had a chance to visit most states except for Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama.

We both love the Lord and are presently serving Him at Chambers Wesleyan Camp and Ministry Center in Beaver Dams, NY.
